One last Sprint to the Finish

John Thomas McGuire

It's been a great week!
On Monday and tuesday we had exchanges with the Almeria elders. Elder Canaya came with me and Elder Parra. Elder Nacorda went to Almeria with Elder Pole'o. It was pretty great! Mostly we just went finding for new investigators and then taught the Paa family. The goal is to get my companions to go finding more because apparently they didn't do that before I got here. Mostly just visiting less-actives. Which is good, but it's better to have balance.
We had the baptismal interview for the Paa family on Thursday, but Sister Paa still needs more time. So we are going to have her reinterviewed this week and hopefully they will be baptized next Sunday before church. Kind of a bummer though that I'm not going to see it because I'm going to Calbayog for my last Sunday but We're still going to work hard to get her prepared.
Everyday i wake up at 5:30 and just ponder there for a little while. This mission has gone by so fast. So many things have happened. I've learned so much. I'm still learning. My study of the Gospels has been fantastic! I just finished the Savior's suffering in Gethsemane and all I have left is His trial, crucifixion, resurrection and final ministry. I truly can say that I feel my Savior's love. It's led me to ponder the events in my life that have helped me to gain a testimony. The things that I've done to have a relationship with my Savior and Heavenly Father. The nights I stayed up late as a teenager reading from the Book of Mormon and truly pleading and asking to know that it is true. Feeling his arms extended out in forgiving mercy when I have asked for His forgiveness. Being engulfed in His love when I so desperately needed healing. His promises are sure. He is the real source of Peace in this world of tribulation.
So this is my last week. I'm not entirely sure what to write about. Mostly the plan is to just finish strong and work hard every single minute of every single day! We have exchanges with the Zone Leaders this week. and then 3 days and then Calbayog to make sure Cian and the Nabong family stay active in the Church. I'm really excited because Calbayog branch is going to the Cebu Temple Dec 1. And we go home through Cebu and will have some time in the afternoon. I really hope I will be able to see some of them at the temple! That would be amazing!
Pray that I'll have the strength to finish strong and to stay strong. I'm trying to keep in perspective that this isn't really an ending, just another beginning. As President Uchtdorf said we are made of the stuff of eternity. That's why it's hard to say goodbye because we don't like endings. I am going to miss this place and these people so much! My heart is starting to split in two. I love it here. I love these people. I love missionary work. I love my nametag. I love being in a position to help others. I do feel the Spirit every single day. It is so fulfilling to act on spiritual promptings.
I love you all! Thanks for the prayers and support and letters! I really do appreciate them even if I don't respond to each individually. I do read them. They are a strength to me! I can't wait to see you all! We will have a great time catching up on everything. Until then, do something today and everyday that will help you and others feel the Spirit.
Love, Elder McGuire

Be not afraid, only believe

Well it's been quite the week!
So I'm here in Naval, Biliran.... Yeah... Check your maps...
To pick up where I left off last week, Elder Harvey and I arrived in Tacloban around8:30pm. President Maurer interviewed us individually at 9 and 9:30. The decision was made to emergency transfer the both of us. For who knows what reason... They still haven't sent up zone leaders to Catarman. It's all very weird. President asked me to go find out why and I replied that at this point I really don't care why I'm being transferred, I'm just going to go work and serve. I told him my goal was to feel the Spirit every single day for the rest of my mission and then to continue with that goal for the rest of my life. So yeah after that he assigned me to be in a trio again here in Biliran zone... I'm with Elder Parra and Elder Nacorda. One is from Cavite and the other is from Surigao. Neither speak English. We are assigned in Caibiran. It's very bukid. very isolated. The members there are very faithful though. We had a baptism on the Saturday I arrived and we are going to have another baptism this coming week for a family where both the father and mother are professional teachers.
Later Monday Night, I stayed up til 3 in the morning doing laundry and packing since I was traveling all day, I brought only 3 weeks of supplies with me. Tuesdaymorning they put me on a van and I went by myself off to the island of Biliran. For those of you keeping track back at home this now makes me a 3 island missionary and this is my 6th zone and 7th area. I got off at the district center and walked into the Biliran zone's zone training meeting, very exhausted. All but the zone leaders were very surprised to see me there. After ztm, we got on a van for caibiran after waiting at the bus stop because they seldomly pass by. When we got to the incredibly small apartment, I passed out and woke up on wednesday.
Wednesday was a great day of work! We taught tons of people. Investigators and Less Actives. We got a total of 7 lessons and all but 1 family came to church of those that we taught. My favorite was to the Paa family. They're the professional teachers. On Sunday, President Maurer came to church and interviewed them for something that happened in their past, and he gave the okay for them to be baptized so now they're going to be baptized next Sunday before church and then confirmed. It's one tremendous blessing to be a part of this one because I'm starting to see a miracle in my patriarchal blessing be fulfilled that if I'm faithful I will see the Church established. It's amazing what revelation can do.
Thursday we got punted mostly. But we still did teach some solid people who came to church. I'm still trying to learn names and the area
Friday we woke up super early in the morning to catch a van to Ormoc where we attended a specialized leadership training for DLs and their companions. It was rather insightful. They based the trainings off of Elder Robbins Talk, "Which Way Do You Face?" I rather enjoy being a junior companion. Less stressful. I sleep well at night.
Saturday we had a baptism in the morning and then went to Cabucgayan so that Elder Parra could interview the sisters' 6 investigators for baptism next week. The work is progressing here. This entire island is an island of converts. I don't think there is one adult who was born into the church. But it is absolutely amazing out here.
Sunday we had the most reverent sacrament meeting. President Tonido (Branch President) asked me to give a talk on the Atonement. I really enjoyed studying for this one. I was followed by the District President. And then President Maurer was the concluding speaker. It was one of those sundays that you just don't expect to happen but it was really cool. After church, we had a meeting with the branch presidency. The goal is to increase sacrament attendance from about high 80s to 120 by the end of December.... It's attainable. After that, they all split with us and we went and visited some super less active/inactive families. I love the work of salvation!!!!
I'm in a good place. I really am. I decided to set a goal for myself to finish the Gospels in the New Testament before I come home. I'm using the student manual study guide so I'm reading about the Savior's ministry chronologically instead of 4 times through. I should be at His final week when I reach my final week. I am really enjoying this study of His life and teachings! I love the faith of people. I love the compassion of the Master. It's such a wonderful thing to read.
So I really only have 1 p day after this. Kind of a sobering thought really. I have 16 days of being a young full time missionary. I have less days than Rick has months.... (Sorry for mentioning that brother! Love you!) But this mission has been absolutely amazing! It's gone by so quickly. I can't believe how fast it's gone and how many people I've met and come to love. Next Sunday will be my last in Caibiran because the Saturday after that I'm going to go to Calbayog and visit my converts there (Cian and the Nabong family) and go to church there one last time. But this work is true. This is the work of Almighty God. He lives! He is at the head of this church and leads and guides it through revelation.
I love you all! Thank you for your continued prayers and faith and love.
Dad I would love nothing more than to be in the temple with my family. I will conform and adapt to whatever plans are made. Just let me know what the plan is so I can try to adjust my sleep schedule on the plane.
Alyssa I gave it some thought and I could use a really nice pair of brown dress shoes that I could wear on Sundays.
Rick keep on keeping on! You work hard every single day and you will look back with no regrets at the end. A great missionary is just a good missionary every single day.
Mom thank you so much for the laugh and for the traditions. I love it :) Y'all are the best. I'm also super grateful that I'm coming home during snowshoveling season and not raking season :)
Until next week! Love you!

The One Year Anniversary of the Event that Defined my Mission and my Life

John Thomas McGuire

Well this past week has been most interesting!

So we left for Tacloban on Pday last monday with the intention of flying to Manila to get fingerprinted on tuesday morning. Then we get a call at 10:30 saying that our flight has been cancelled and rescheduled for thursday. So on tuesday we got our chest x rayed and some departure stuff taken care of then we had MLC devotional Tuesday night.

Wednesday was MLC. It was rather interesting to be an observer when so many people were new. 2 new APs and 15 new STLs and ZLs. I looked around the room and realized that I had been to MLC with most of these missionaries trainers... yeah I'm pretty old in the mission. I'm not really sure how to feel about a lot of things. Mostly, a lot of things are changing. I used to feel like I was being pushed out of the mission. But after this past week, I've realized that I'm not immortal in this mission. Other people need to learn how to do the things I've learned how to do. This was a good experience for me to realize that the mission is in good hands.

But after this past week, I've realized that I'm not immortal in this mission. Other people need to learn how to do the things I've learned how to do. This was a good experience for me to realize that the mission is in good hands.

So,Thursday we flew out to Manila. It was me, Elder Harvey and Sister Simkins. Other sisters still flew out on Tuesday, so it was just us three. We landed about 8 and decided to have breakfast at burger king. Ahh Manila what a great place. Our driver picked us up and took us to the Bureau of Immigration. Such a familiar place. This is where they took us last year to get
fingerprinted and whatnot.
 It was probably
fitting that it was the 1 year anniversary for me to be back there. Surprisingly they had a system going much better and we were able to get everything done in an hour and a half instead of 4 days. Afterwards, we had the wonderful opportunity of going to the temple.
We arrived at the area office/MTC/Temple and saw Sister Pongyan! (one of the STLs during the typhoon) she was so happy to see us and we got to do a session in the temple together.

The temple was so amazing. It's so peaceful. You really can just drop everything at the door and just feel the love of the Savior in every fiber of your being. When I got into the celestial room, there was a family just standing in a group hug, holding eachother and crying. I was overcome by the Spirit and started crying too. I sat down next to two young men who had just gone through for the first time. They were going into the MTC the next day to serve in the Davao and San Pablo Missions. One was very, VERY homesick. I put my arm around him and comforted him telling him that things were going to be alright and that he was going to have a wonderful time on his mission and see lots of miracles and that God would take care of his family. I shared D+C 100:1 with him. After the session, this same homesick elder found me in the locker room. His shirt and tie had gone missing. So I gave him my tie, but I didn't have an extra shirt. He asked me to go to the area office where his luggage was and get a clean shirt for him. I did and we returned and I took pictures with these two. I'm so grateful for that opportunity. Heavenly Father just puts us in the right place at the right time to help others and be an answer to their prayer. I left the temple feeling so full of love and with a desire to follow the promptings of the Spirit better.
That night we got to talk with some missionaries from San Pablo mission because they were getting fingerprinted for their exit visas the next day. It was fun to talk and share mission experiences. Some were very similar which just made me laugh. Another good thing about going to Manila, was that I got to test out my Tagalog. I think I'm going to do just fine next semester. I could speak and understand just fine. The next day we flew back into Calbayog and then caught a van ride to Catarman. We were absolutely exhausted from waking up at 2 in the morning.

Good luck to both of you on your mission!
You are both going to be fantastic missionaries!!

Sunday, church was chaotic. Catarman 2nd ward is not the most reverent but it has been improving since we asked Bishop to emphasize it. I'd still be very ashamed to bring investigators there just because it's so noisy and hard to feel the spirit. But even so, it's impossible for me to get a baptism now since Carlo didn't come to church for the second week in a row.

Anyways, I finished the biography of Thomas S. Monson To the Rescue and the Continuous Conversion. Such great reads. I hope to pattern my life after President Monson's. His is one so filled with service and following spiritual promptings.
I love you all. Thank you so much for the prayers and especially that note about uncle Mark and Elder Neilson. That's what I needed to hear most today. Thank you for the love and for raising me in the Gospel.

Have a wonderful week filled with miracles!

Love you!

                                       What trunky looks like

Oh and yes I got flight plans. I will be in PHX Sky Harbor at 2:38p.m.  Wednesday,                 December 3rd. I'll forward you the rest of the flights next week but yeah... it's getting close!

                                                   ....we saw Sister Pongyan!

Oh yeah and Sister Llano works at the Distribution center! Small world filled with tender mercies. She was in the Provo MTC with me. She was in my zone. She served in Cape Verde Africa Mission. She's from Macrohon Southern Leyte. Heavenly Father has a plan for each one of his children!

I'm just here to keep it real

John Thomas McGuire

Well it's been an interesting week.

To start it off, my legs were killing me. That is the last time i will ever do squats. Despite the pain, we went out and worked.

We had a special fast for Carlo as well as fast sunday. We also gave him a blessing so that he would be able to overcome the peer pressure of drinking. This week was All Souls Day and All Saints Day so there are a few fiestas. Thankfully, he did not drink. He is progressing very well. The bummer though is that he didn't come to church because his wife was sick... lame. So now his baptism would have to be on the 29th, our last saturday. But he'd have to come for the next 3 weeks. Please pray for him.

I went on two exchanges this past week. My first was with Elder Cotcher. He just finished his 12 weeks training. He's pretty cool though. He's in a position that not many elders are ever in. After he was trained, he transferred, became a district leader, and had to learn a new language, oh and his follow up trainer doesn't speak english really at all. So yeah he is super stressed out. I think the exchange really helped him out. He is a good missionary and is going to be a great help to the ward up here.

My next exchange was with Elder Biador. This was more interesting. It was out in Mondragon and Roxas. Elder Biador is a convert of about 3 years. He is a pretty good teacher but he has some big time pride issues. He's a good kid though. Just needs more time and experience.

We had a broadcast from Manila last night. Elder Oaks spoke and so did Elder Robbins of the 70 and Bishop Causse and Elder and Sister Ardern. It was pretty great! I think the biggest insight I liked came from Elder Oaks talk. He was talking a little about the 4th of the 10 Commandments. "Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy. Six days thou shalt work." He went on to say that often this second part of the commandment is not kept. The Lord has commanded us that we should work and be hard working and industrious. It's so interesting to me how I can know the commandments but when they are explained by an Apostle you get a whole new insight. Dad if you wouldn't mind trying to get me a job at a law firm or something like that up in Utah, I would really appreciate that. If you can balance that into your already hard-working  schedule :) Thanks so much for your fantastic example!

This week we aren't going to have a whole lot of work. We fly to Manilatomorrow to get fingerprinted for our exit visas then we have MLC on wednesday, then we travel back thursday afternoon because we have to get our chest x rayed in tacloban. The week is going to go by super fast.

I'm super grateful to be where I'm at and to have the guidance of the Spirit in my life. I'm grateful for a family who loves and cares and prays for me and my success. Please know that I'm praying for you too! Yesterday I taught sundayschool about Eternal Families. I shared the experience I had when I came home and we all went to the Mesa Temple to do some sealings. I can't wait to do that again. It is one of my favorite memories, being together with my family in the temple! :)

Love you all! Keep on following the example of the Son of God and always seek to have the Spirit in your life! God lives. This is His work! We are in His hands.
